FAITH TRUST RESPECT MERCY
Our Leadership Team
From the Principal's Desk
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Thank you for the important role you play, especially in our current climate, to ensure that partnerships with all community members have been established to strengthen the links between school and home.
Can you believe that we are over halfway through the term already! To acknowledge the beginning of Lent, our students attended the Ash Wednesday Mass on Wednesday 17 February and once again, they displayed wonderful reverence throughout Mass and were commended by Fr Elver for their respectful behaviour. During this special Lenten season it would be terrific if families could have ongoing discussion about the significance of Lent and engage in prayer together; look at the possibility of each family member giving up something they enjoy doing or like eating, out of love for Jesus for the ultimate sacrifice He made for us; and engage in almsgiving eg acts of kindness, donating clothes or unused toys to charity and putting aside loose change to donate to Project Compassion. Through prayer, fasting and almsgiving we strengthen our relationship with Christ and one another.
The spiritual, educational, social, emotional and physical development of our students is important to us at Liwara and one way in which we foster this is by learning about and promoting our School and Gospel Values. Our policies, procedures and daily teaching are underpinned by these values and are rooted in the teachings of Christ. They promote in students a spirit of Christian service and foster in them an understanding of the responsibilities they have to the common good of our wider society. Each term the students have a value to focus on and learn about. In Term One our Value focus is TRUST - Term Two RESPECT – Term Three MERCY – Term Four FAITH.
We met as a new Advisory Council (formerly known as the School Board) on the 16 February where members were engaged in discussion and planning for the 2021 school year. Through partnerships and by enabling the coming together of various people with a range of gifts and talents working alongside the school, we become a stronger community and are more effective within the religious dimension, individual identity and educational charter.
Our first Parents & Friends Zoom meeting was held on 15 February and it was wonderful to hear about the many events the committee are planning to run again this year. The Liwara P&F have always been a strong group with outstanding commitment to the goals and aspirations of the school. They work effectively and collaboratively with the school to achieve set objectives each year. Where harmonious relationships and partnerships exist, the benefits are many for our children’s development.

Year 5 Performance Assembly
The Year 5 students will be hosting the first Performance Assembly for this year next Friday, 12 March in the Ahern Centre. They will perform for the school students at 2.00pm and then for the parents at 2.30pm. Parents attending are asked to enter the school via Gate #7 which will be opened at 2.25pm and are reminded to maintain social distancing when in attendance.
Project Compassion
Every year, Catholics are encouraged to demonstrate faith, love and generosity during Lent. Everyone can be a part of this incredible community, who believe that there are simple actions we can all take to “be more” for our world.
All families were given a small Project Compassion box last week. Please try to make a donation to Project Compassion. As a family you might also like to talk about ways that you can put your compassion into action or give something up for Lent. Thank you for your generosity in supporting Project Compassion.
Liwara Swimming Carnival
The Liwara Swimming Carnival will be held at HBF Arena Joondalup on Thursday 11 March. All Year 4 to 6 students will be participating. Parents are permitted to attend however, due to Covid restrictions, parents are unable to assist at this carnival and must remain in the allocated grandstand area at a distance from all the students at all times. A letter with further details was sent home to relevant classes last week. The programme of events will be forwarded via Seesaw early next week.
OUR CLASSROOM NEWS
From Year 5
YEAR 5 BIG DAY OUT
By Eva
On Friday, the 27th of February, the Year Five students went to Point Walter for their BIG DAY OUT. This day was promising to be filled with challenges and team games and the aim was to build team support.
Some highlights from the day from the students.
Lily- I liked the high ropes because, they were fun and challenging.
Josh- I liked the recess because, they gave us chocolate cake.
Fernanda-I liked the flying fox because it challenged me and caused me to face my fears.
Emerson – I enjoyed the flying fox because I faced my fear of heights.
Mason – I enjoyed the bus ride.
Lucas – I enjoyed the vertical climb because it was challenging when you had to lift yourself up.
Science
All classes are enjoying their Biological Science units of work. We are busy looking at Living and Non Living things, classification of animals, seed dispersal and growing lots of things! The Kindergarten children have been learning about The Very Hungry Caterpillar. In Year 2, children brought in photos of themselves as a baby and how they look now as we are discussing How We Grow and Change. The Year 6 students are looking at Fungi, including yeast, mushrooms and mould.
Sustainability@Liwara
What an amazing week for sustainability at Liwara! Our seedlings have begun to grow with all the rain, extra humidity and sunshine. With the help of the 2021 Year 6 Green Team, also known as the Environment Ministry and Garden Gurus, we look forward to actively continuing sustainability, by growing vegetables for our school canteen, worm farming and recycling. I look forward to welcoming the new members of the Green Team next week.
Liwara students have done a great job recycling food scraps this week. Please remember that our food scraps are PLASTIC FREE. Mrs Millar’s chickens love Liwara food scraps and so do our Liwara worms, minus any plastic of course!
Below, you can see that the heirloom “Tommy Toes” cherry tomato seedlings are sprouting, as are our lettuce and beetroot. Our junior primary planters still have silverbeet growing strongly from last year as it can be grown as an annual or perennial vegetable. We are doing the latter!
Sustainability NEWS FLASH!
Liwara has been successful in attaining a WasteWise Grant from the WA Department of Water and Envrironmental Regulation (DWER). With this year’s grant, we shall be constructing a purpose-built, dedicated recycling area in our school. We shall also be involving all students in more class recycling initiatives such as food scrap recycling in worm farms. Students will be able to bring to school any unwanted vegetable kitchen scraps from home for our school worm farms, once the new worm farms are set up! With the grant funds, we also look forward to growing a lot more vegetables and plants around the school to involve our students more actively in Liwara sustainability.
Handy Hints for Sustainability
This week’s handy hint is “Keep bringing in your Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) recycling for Liwara!” Please keep bringing in your rinsed Type 1 and 2 plastics and aluminium cans for our Greenbatch recycling as well as CDS approved containers in our Greenbatch bins. We will label the bags with our CDS scheme ID C10339478.
Thank you for your continued patience, caring and support.
Together we all make a difference. Stay safe and KEEP RECYCLING Liwara!
Warm regards,
Mr Greenhill and the Sustainability Team
Library
Mrs Millar
Mrs Millar was our guest in the library this week and she read the book The Gruffalo to the Pre-Primary classes. The children were enthralled by the story and delighted to have Mrs Millar as our reader!

The book sale is coming soon. Collect any books you would like to donate and bring them to the library on Friday 12 March OR Monday 15 March. Proceeds from sales will go to Project Compassion and more Book Sale details will be circulated via Seesaw and Facebook.
Library Busy Bees are coming back!
As there are no classes in the library on Friday mornings we would like to re-establish our busy bees which proved to be so worthwhile.
If you would like to help just drop into the library after you drop your children off on a Friday morning.
The busy bee will run from 8.45am - 9.30am each Friday and we look forward to seeing you, and as there is lots of space we can safely adhere to physical distancing protocols.
