Our Leadership Team

From the Principal's Desk

Dear Parents and  Caregivers

First Communion - Our prayers and congratulations go out to our Year 4 students and families on such a special occasion and hope that by receiving Jesus they will grow in love, forgiveness and service for others, to be like Jesus.  Thank you to our teachers, Mrs Karen Swift and Mr Barry McGilloway, Fr Elver and the Parish Sacramental Team who have been guiding and supporting all the students through their preparations.  The Masses have been lovely and a wonderful reflection of the commitment of our faith and your support and prayers for our children and families at this special time is greatly appreciated.

As Catholics, we know that the Holy Eurcharist is the source and summit of our faith:  It is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.  Pope Francis has called it the ‘Sacrament of Love’: “….The Eucharist is at the heart of  ‘Christian Initiation,’ together with Baptism and Confirmation, and it constitutes the source of the Church’s life itself.  From this Sacrament of love, in fact, flows every authentic journey of faith, of communion, and of witness….”  Jesus comes to us in a unique way in the Eucharist.  When He come, we receive Him into our body and our soul.  This is very beautiful, personal and intimate.

Semester One Reports – Parents with students from Pre-Primary to Year Six will have access to their child’s Semester One Reports via the SEQTA portal this afternoon, Friday 24 June, from 3.30pm.  Pre-Primary and new families to the school this semester, you would have received an email from the school informing you of how to set up a new SEQTA account.  If you have not received this email, please check your junk mail and then call the office, if necessary.  Families with an existing account you are encouraged to log in and check you have access before Wednesday 29 June as the school will be closed due to the Staff Retreat and there will be no one available in the office.  If you have any problems accessing your child’s report, please do not hesitate to contact our office staff for assistance.

Staff  Retreat - On the last two days of Term 2 all our staff will be travelling down to the St John of God Retreat Centre in Shoalwater for our bi-annual Staff Spiritual Retreat. It is a time set apart to be in quiet rest and solitude with God.  For generations, people have gone on spiritual retreats to encounter God and experience spiritual renewal… It is a way of entering into the presence of God and allowing him to nourish our souls.  We are pleased to have Fr Elver joining us to celebrate Mass in the beautiful chapel at the retreat centre.  We will also be engaged in a day of Curriculum and Communications Professional Learning

Interschool Cross Country Carnival - As I write this our students are eagerly participating in the Interschool Cross Country Carnival.  Mr Dols and the staff who are in attendance, are as excited as our students as all our sporting events are highlighted by our students’ strong Liwara spirit of enthusiasm, endurance, collegiality, and most of all their energetic attempts of always doing their best but steered by a genuine sense of collegiality and ‘sports person ship’.

KINDY 2023/2024 AND PRE KINDY 2023 If you have a child who is due to start Kindy in 2023, I urge you to contact our enrolment officer, Karen Rosser, to discuss the enrolment process as the places are filling steadily. I am currently meeting with future and current parents for our Kindy 2023/2024 & Pre Kindy 2023 interviews.

NSI School Climate Survey.

Catholic Education WA (CEWA) have scheduled Liwara Catholic primary School to be one of a number of schools to participate in its annual NSI School Climate Survey this year.  The last time we  were involved in a similar  School Community Survey was  in 2021.

The Liwara School Community Survey that was conducted in 2021 provided much valued feedback from its parents, students and the community. As reported in the School Advisory Council’s Annual Report and through school newsletters, this feedback gave good acclaim to many of the school management systems, functions and activities, as well as, constructive advice that saw actions such as: re-instigation of many after school hours activities, a focus/renewal of playground structures and the introduction of the ‘Making Jesus Real’ programme to assist with building positive relationships.

For similar reasons, we look forward to all aspects of the community (i.e. parents, students, staff) having an opportunity to once again provide such relevant and helpful feedback.

The NSI School Climate Survey will be an online survey that will be open to all parents for two weeks only in Term Three between Monday 1st August and Monday 15th August.  All staff and students will also be asked to participate in the survey within school hours. Further details regarding accessibility to the survey (e.g. links, codes, etc) will be provided at the commencement of Term Three.

This survey will once again provide further valued feedback that can support future planning of the school processes and its activities. We hope you are able to contribute to this collective community feedback.  Mr John Dols will be coordinating the NSI School Climate Survey this year.

Wishing you God’s blessings and a wonderful weekend!

Year 4 News

Year 4 Holy Communion Retreat

Last week the Year 4 students took part in a Holy Communion Retreat Day at the newly refurbished All Saints Parish Centre run by 24/7 Ministry. Retreats help the students reflect on their own faith and provide time to understand and nourish it. The students learnt lots about the importance of the Sacraments and how they can grow their relationship with God by participating fully in the Mass. They played lots of fun games, participated in a variety of activities that increased their knowledge and understanding. Here are some of the highlights from the students.

We enjoyed playing the games Link Tag, Fruit Salad and Musical Bobs. It was good how some of the games involved us cooperating in teams and revising the information we learnt.

We enjoyed re-enacting the Last Super and remembering how Jesus shared his last meal with his friends. We shared Naan Bread as the Body of Christ and fruit juice as the blood of Christ, just like Jesus’ disciples.

We learnt about Baptism and how it is so important for us to live a better life as part of God’s family. We also learnt about the four symbols of Baptism (candle, water, oil and white garment) and their symbolism.

We learnt about being a member of the Family of God and how we can live a healthy and safe life.

We enjoyed listening to the leaders’ funny stories about themselves describing their likes and personalities.

As I look forward to my retirement next week I wish to convey my deep appreciation and thanks to the entire Liwara community.  I have thoroughly enjoyed the seven years I have spent as a staff member first in OSHC and more recently in the library. I also want you to know what a blessing it's been to work with students, staff and the wider school community during this time. It has been both an honour and a privilege to work at Liwara Catholic Primary School. I look back with gratitude on the fun times at OSHC and in the library. It is my hope that I have instilled in the students a love of reading by making books come alive and by making reading fun, fun and more fun!

The children have asked me what I will do when I retire. I have assured them I'm going to do a lot of things and very few of them conform to the notion of ‘retirement’! I am going to travel, I am going to read books that have been waiting on my 'must read' list. I will garden, indulge in hobbies, take up some new challenges and enjoy spending even more time with my grandchildren.

Canteen News

On Thursday 23rd for Wellness Week, and Pyjama Day, we sold some delicious Berry Smoothies with added yoghurt and some berry and plain pikelets. Delicious!

This week we sent home our End of Term outstanding IOU’s, could you please pay these as soon possible so we may close off for the term.   Thank you.

We have unfortunately had to adjust our menu prices going into Term 3.    The canteen costs for food and incidentals have risen fairly sharply, however, most of the price increases we have kept to a minimum.  The focaccia pizza slabs will be back next term as these are very popular.

This year’s figures for Starcap are now closed and the file has been presented to WASCA for evaluation. We will update our results as soon as they are available.

Have a safe and wonderful half year break, we look forward to seeing you all again in Term 3.
